What is Peer Mediation?
Peer Mediation allows residents to have assistance in resolving their conflict(s) by meeting with a pair of trained, neutral co-mediators. Together, they will define the concerns and work to find mutually agreeable solutions. The agreement is then put in writing and a copy is given to each participant.

How long will it take?
The process will typically take 1-2 hours, depending on the case and the needs of the participants involved.

Who is Peer Mediation for?
Peer Mediators are trained to handle conflicts between two or more individuals having an interpersonal dispute. These conflicts could occur between:

  • Roommates
  • Hallmates
  • Members of an Area Council
  • Friends
  • You
  • And others

What types of cases does Peer Mediation handle?
Contents of conflicts will vary, but some common concerns include:

  • Noise levels
  • Study habits
  • Use of personal or shared items
  • Cleaning habits
  • Misunderstandings
  • Guests

What are some advantages of Peer Mediation?

  • Privacy is greater when meeting with Peer Mediators.
  • Convenience and opportunity to get assistance from trained peers.
  • Using neutral mediators from outside the community takes the RA out of the center of the conflict and can help them maintain credibility and neutrality in the eyes of their residents.
  • Focuses on problem solving rather than blame.
  • Flexible and creative!
  • It is educational; Participants learn skills that they can use in future conflicts.
  • There is little risk. Agreements are voluntary.
  • No cost to UNF students!
